You might think you want an experienced founder, c-suite officer or investor with 15+ years of experience successfully leading companies in your industry to coach you.
Why? You think you want someone who has successfully overcome the obstacles that companies face so that you, too, can succeed.
It makes sense.
Less than 5 percent of businesses survive for more than 5 years. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
Given the time, money and energy involved in starting and growing a business, who wouldn’t want to be sure that their investment produces a return?
It’s only logical.
And yet, life is rarely logical.
What happened to the 95% that ‘failed’?
My guess is that the lessons their founders learned from the ‘failed’ company led to them building something greater
OR
some companies were probably started for reasons that never were sustainable.
OR
some founders tried to fit themselves and their companies into ‘business as usual’ rules but couldn’t
Truth is, there could be a plethora of reasons why those other business are no longer in existence.
But what does that have to do with you and your company?
Really?
Nothing.
You’re unique.
There’s no other human exactly like you and no other company exactly like yours.
So here’s my offering for you:
No one else’s ‘experience’ can trump your own knowing.
Whether it’s 15 years or 150 years.
And who defines “successful”?
I certainly hope YOU are.
My definition of success is simple, yet there’s so much nuance.
I’ve had the privilege of being able to feel 100% successful while my life from the outside looked like a hot mess.
I’ve also known intimately the pain of having a life that most were jealous of and feeling guilty that I was sooooo dissatisfied with it.
So, if you defer your judgment to someone with much more ‘experience’ than you, you miss out on those defining moments where you are completely confident that you know what is the right decision for you.
And a series of micro decisions that are out of alignment with who YOU are will steer your company and life in a direction that will NOT feel like a success, no matter what others think.
And that too is ok.
I guess it just depends on how much you want to trust someone else versus trust yourself.
Because you CAN do whatever it is you truly want to do.
This is not a feel-good cheer. You are already equipped to achieve your unique definition of success; all you need is to align and trust yourself.
